Why it matters: Mechanical engineering students at Hochschule Bielefeld's Minden campus produced a bicycle helmet in a practical project built on structures found in nature.

In a practical project, mechanical engineering students at Hochschule Bielefeld (HSBI) on its Minden campus analysed the structures that help turtle shells and bones resist breaking.

The students then transferred these natural concepts as bionic structures into a technical product, a bicycle helmet, the university said.

The university says the helmet protects against impacts better than some commercially available helmets.
