How we report

How we report

How we choose, check and present the stories you read.

Where our stories come from

We follow ministries, regulators, quality agencies, research funders, intergovernmental bodies, sector associations, universities and specialist publishers around the world. The full list is on our sources page. We report on what these organisations announce and publish, credit them by name and link to the original in every story.

What makes a story

We cover developments that a university leader would want to know about: policy and regulation, funding, governance and leadership, research, international partnerships and mobility, students, staff, teaching and digital change. We do not cover routine events, marketing or announcements that offer little for decision-makers.

Checking the facts

Every fact in a story must come from the original report or another named source. Names, figures and dates are checked against those sources, and we never invent quotations. When a development rests on a single announcement, we attribute it to the organisation that made it.

The editor’s view

Each story carries a view from the editor who leads that desk: what the development means for institutions, what remains uncertain, and what to watch next. It is clearly separated from the reported facts.

Corrections

If we get something wrong, we correct it on the story and list it on our corrections page. To report an error, use our contact page.

For publishers

We read public news feeds, credit the publisher and link to the original. Our feed reader identifies itself as HigherEdSignalBot/1.0 (+https://higheredsignal.com/methodology/#crawler). To ask us to change how we follow your site, please contact us.
