Why it matters: Australia is set to become an associate member of Horizon Europe, which the Go8 calls the world's largest research and innovation programme, in January 2027.

The Group of Eight (Go8) shared a conversation between its chief executive, Vicki Thomson, and Australia's Chief Scientist, Professor Tony Haymet.

According to the Go8, the conversation took place in the reception area of the Falling Walls Science Summit in Berlin.

The Go8 said Australia is to join Horizon Europe as an associate member in January 2027.

The two discussed why that association is so important, with the Go8 describing Horizon Europe as the world's largest research and innovation programme.
