Why it matters: The University of Kufa's campus irrigation of crops and green spaces now draws on solar-powered groundwater pumps, according to the university.

The University of Kufa said that, through its Diwan Affairs Department, it is continuing work to prepare and maintain agricultural wells within its university city.

According to the university, the wells are being supported with solar energy systems that run the pumps extracting groundwater for watering crops and green spaces on campus.

The university said the systems supply the electrical power needed to operate the well pumps, and presented the work as part of its push for environmental sustainability and wider use of renewable energy.
