Why it matters: The prize recognises doctoral work on agro-waste valorisation in Xiamen University Malaysia's School of Energy and Chemical Engineering and its two named supervisors.

Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) said doctoral student Chew Zhi Ling received the Best Oral Presenter Award at i-COSTECH 2026.

Her supervisors are Chen Binghui, a professor, and Kua Yin Leng, an assistant professor, both based in XMUM's School of Energy and Chemical Engineering.

According to the university, her project combines oil from black soldier fly larvae reared on oil palm biomass with durian seed as a gelling agent to make an oleogel that resists oxidation, and points to gains for waste reuse and the circular economy.

Universiti Teknologi MARA's Perlis Branch, through its applied sciences faculty, organised the two-day event, which took place on 23-24 September 2026 at Universitas Islam Riau in Pekanbaru, Indonesia.
