Maastricht childhood obesity professor aims to tie hospital expertise centre to Venlo research
Paediatrician Edgar van Mil, who holds Maastricht University's Childhood Obesity chair, wants to connect a hospital-based national centre he founded with his academic research group in Venlo.
Why it matters: Maastricht University's System Earth Science group in Venlo is where Van Mil intends to bring his hospital work on severely obese children into university research.
Maastricht University said paediatrician Edgar van Mil holds its chair in Childhood Obesity within the Faculty of Science and Engineering.
Van Mil founded a nationwide centre of expertise for young patients with extreme obesity, based at Jeroen Bosch Hospital in 's-Hertogenbosch, the university reported.
According to the university, he aims to connect that clinical centre with his academic post in Venlo, where he belongs to the System Earth Science research group.
Van Mil said genetics accounts for over 60 per cent of people's susceptibility to overweight and argued that the whole of society shares responsibility for tackling it.

Children with extreme obesity and their families are the group Van Mil's work targets; if he succeeds in tying the 's-Hertogenbosch centre to the Venlo research group, his hospital care and university research would operate together.
