HKUST hosts forum marking three decades of Putonghua proficiency testing in Hong Kong
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology held a forum on 2 November 2026 looking back on 30 years of the Putonghua Shuiping Ceshi (PSC), a Mandarin proficiency test, in Hong Kong.
Why it matters: PSC examiners and Putonghua teaching and testing bodies in Hong Kong met education officials to take stock of the test after 30 years.
HKUST said its Center for Language Education hosted the anniversary forum on campus on 2 November 2026, with the Joint Committee of PSC Centers of Hong Kong Tertiary Institutions as organiser.
According to the university, Vice Minister of Education Ren Youqun spoke by video, and HKUST President Nancy Ip also addressed attendees.
HKUST reported that those attending included officials, scholars and examiners from Hong Kong's Education Bureau and its Examinations and Assessment Authority, as well as the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research, the Ministry of Education and local Putonghua training and testing bodies.
Ren Youqun said in his message that three decades of use had made the PSC an established language test in Hong Kong.

For Hong Kong's PSC examiners and Putonghua teaching and testing bodies, the forum was an occasion to look back on the test's record and discuss where Mandarin teaching and assessment in the city should go next.
