IIIT Hyderabad and Ati Robotics develop camera-based AI navigation for warehouse robots
IIIT Hyderabad's Robotics Research Center has worked with Ati Robotics for three years on AI navigation for autonomous warehouse robots that reduces reliance on dense LiDAR (laser-scanning) maps.
Why it matters: IIIT Hyderabad's Robotics Research Center and Ati Robotics are the parties directly involved in the three-year collaboration on warehouse robot navigation.
The International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad (IIIT-H) said its Robotics Research Center and Ati Robotics have collaborated for three years on AI-based navigation for autonomous warehouse robots.
According to the institute, the work focuses on technology that does not rely on LiDAR (laser-scanning) sensing and instead uses cameras, image sequences and 3D foundation models.
The institute said researchers experimented with sparse localisation, which estimates a robot's position from limited data or landmarks, with the aim of reducing the need for heavy, dense LiDAR maps.
According to Professor Madhava Krishna, in indoor spaces such as warehouses this involves breaking scenes down into landmarks like "next to the door" or "opposite the elevator".
