Chilean rectors' council vice-president urges restoring rejected education and science budget
After the Education and Science items of Chile's 2027 budget bill were rejected, the Council of Rectors' vice-president asked the Government and Parliament to restore the resources, at least to the amounts originally approved for 2026.
Why it matters: Chile's Government and Parliament have been asked by the rectors' council vice-president to restore Education and Science resources to at least the amounts approved for 2026.
The Council of Rectors of Chilean Universities (CRUCH) reported that its vice-president, Osvaldo Corrales, described the rejection of the Education and Science items of the 2027 budget bill as a new opportunity to open a dialogue.
According to CRUCH, Corrales called on the Government and Parliament to find ways to restore resources in both areas, at least up to the amounts originally approved for 2026.
CRUCH said the remarks came after the 2027 budget bill was dispatched to the Chamber.
Corrales, a rector, warned of a risk of eroding knowledge-generation capacities built up over decades, CRUCH reported.

The call is addressed to Chile's Government and Parliament: if they act on it, Education and Science resources would return at least to the amounts originally approved for 2026, following the dispatch of the 2027 budget bill to the Chamber.
What to watch
- Whether the Government and Parliament find a formula to restore the Education and Science resources, as Corrales requested.
