Why it matters: Researchers in computational fluid dynamics have lost a mathematician whose Navier-Stokes solution methods, Berkeley says, enabled engineering and medical simulations.

UC Berkeley reported that mathematician Alexandre Chorin has died at the age of 88.

According to Berkeley, Chorin received the National Medal of Science in 2014.

Berkeley said Chorin devised ingenious approaches to solving the Navier-Stokes equations, which describe how fluids flow, making simulations possible for engineering and medical uses.
