Panel reported by UNAM gazette finds Mexico's demographic shift outpacing projections
An analysis panel drawing on Mexico's 2025 Intercensal Survey concluded that demographic change is moving faster than projected, posing serious challenges for public finances, social security and the labour market.
Why it matters: Mexican policymakers and researchers working on public finances, social security and employment face the challenges the panel linked to faster-than-projected demographic change.
Gaceta UNAM, the newspaper of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, reported on an analysis panel titled «México en transformación: una mirada demográfica y económica» (Mexico in transformation: a demographic and economic view), based on the 2025 Intercensal Survey.
According to the gazette, one of the panel's main conclusions was that demographic change in Mexico is advancing faster than had been projected.
The panel said this pace poses severe challenges for the sustainability of public finances, social security and the labour market, the gazette reported.

If demographic change in Mexico is indeed outpacing projections, as the panel concluded, then those responsible for public finances, social security and labour market policy face the severe sustainability challenges it described.
