Why it matters: Researchers and doctoral candidates at the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava are the focus of joint research, training, mobility and institutional reform with LUT and IMT.

According to the European Commission's CORDIS database, TWIN-OPHTHALMO seeks to strengthen the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava (STU) in AI-driven ophthalmic diagnostics and treatment through Twinning with Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology (LUT) and Institut Mines-Télécom (IMT).

CORDIS lists the project under Horizon Europe's 'Widening participation and spreading excellence' programme as a Coordination and Support Action.

The project description says the work targets diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration using AI for biomedical image analysis, alongside research on biomaterials for controlled drug delivery.

The project combines joint research, advanced training, researcher mobility and institutional reform, including modernising doctoral education in line with European practice, its description states.

Researchers, doctoral candidates and research managers at STU are the project's direct beneficiaries; if the planned mobility, training and doctoral reforms proceed as described, STU staff will work hands-on with LUT and IMT on AI, medical imaging and research management.
