Why it matters: Students and library users at Xiamen University Malaysia were offered exhibits, puzzles and games designed to draw them to mathematics outside formal teaching.

The university reported that its Department of Mathematics Student Council and XMUM Library opened Mathematics Week on 20 October 2026, in what was their first joint initiative.

According to the university, the library in the A3 building hosted upwards of 100 displays showing how mathematics connects with student life, world cultures, the arts and other fields of study.

The programme offered a hunt for over 20 puzzle cards concealed across the library, game stalls including Tower of Hanoi and Conway's Soldier, and a trading game whose indices were built from library figures.

Organisers said they wanted to make the subject easier to approach and more appealing outside lectures, and that some installations would stay up once the week finished on 25 October.
