Why it matters: Caltech's UVEX team now moves to building and executing a NASA space mission due to launch by 2031.

Caltech said NASA has announced a commitment to launch the Caltech-led Ultraviolet Explorer (UVEX) space observatory by 2031.

According to Caltech, the mission will identify millions of tiny galaxies for the first time and produce the first deep all-sky maps in ultraviolet light.

Caltech said that with NASA's commitment secured, the UVEX team will begin building and carrying out the mission.

Caltech President Ray Jayawardhana described UVEX as a bold leap forward in exploring the ultraviolet universe.
