Georgia Tech moves bike and scooter registration to Parking and Transportation Services

Georgia Tech has shifted registration of bikes and other micromobility devices to its Department of Parking and Transportation Services, with free sign-up, as its police department reissues campus safety advice.

Why it matters: Georgia Tech riders of bikes and e-scooters now register devices free through the parking and transportation permit website, which helps campus police prove ownership.

Georgia Tech said it recently moved its bike registration system under the Department of Parking and Transportation Services, with free registration through the permit purchase website.

According to the Georgia Tech Police Department (GTPD), a registration permit helps officers prove ownership if a micromobility vehicle goes missing.

Riders who complete GTPD's short online Ride Smart course can receive a free bike helmet, the university said.

GTPD recommends U-locks for all micromobility vehicles, advises registering laptops and other valuables, and notes that such devices count as vehicles under Georgia law.

Georgia Tech students and staff who ride bikes, e-scooters or similar devices register them at no cost through Parking and Transportation Services; if a registered device goes missing, the permit helps GTPD establish ownership.
