Unpad academics launch Cyclow to tackle organic waste from Bandung hotels and restaurants
Researchers at Universitas Padjadjaran (Unpad) have launched Cyclow, a cross-sector initiative supporting research on circular-bioeconomy handling of organic waste from Bandung's hospitality and catering sector.
Why it matters: Unpad academics Tomy Perdana and Gemilang Lara Utama Saripudin lead the initiative, whose research targets organic waste from Bandung's hotels, restaurants, cafés and caterers.
Unpad said the Cyclow cross-sector collaboration was formally launched at a kick-off meeting at Hotel The Luxton Bandung on Friday 16 October, led by Unpad academics Prof. Tomy Perdana and Dr. Gemilang Lara Utama Saripudin.
According to the university, Cyclow supports research on transforming organic waste from HOREKA, the hotel, restaurant, café and catering sector, using a circular bioeconomy approach to cut emissions and strengthen environmental resilience in Bandung.
Unpad said a study found the sector's organic waste handling faces serious obstacles, including inconsistent sorting at source, a fragmented management chain and weak links between waste processing and the local food system.
The university said existing Bandung city programmes such as Kang Pisman, Buruan SAE and DASHAT have strong potential to be reinforced to make better use of organic waste.
