Why it matters: Nigeria's tertiary institutions would be affected if the Federal Government acts on the University of Ilorin council chair's call for more research funding.

According to the University of Ilorin, its Pro-Chancellor and Governing Council chair, Abiodun Jacob Aluko, asked the Federal Government to raise research funding for the country's tertiary institutions.

He made the appeal in his address at the university's 41st convocation ceremonies, held on 21 October 2026 in the University Auditorium.

Aluko called research the engine of development and said no nation can develop beyond the level of research done in its universities.

He welcomed continued TETFund support for infrastructure and research and said the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) had brought great relief to thousands of students.
