Two Surrey academic leaders attend World Economic Forum's first Beyond Tourism Day in Geneva
Surrey's business school dean and its hospitality and tourism head took part in a World Economic Forum tourism event in Geneva last month that drew 97 people from 80 organisations.
Why it matters: Surrey Business School and its hospitality and tourism department were represented by their leaders at a World Economic Forum gathering on tourism's future.
According to the University of Surrey, business school dean Professor Iis Tussyadiah and Dr Marion Karl, who heads Surrey Hospitality and Tourism Management (SHTM), went to Geneva on 25 September for the World Economic Forum's first Beyond Tourism Day.
The university said the gathering attracted 97 people representing 80 organisations from 22 countries and destinations, among them figures from industry and government.
Surrey reported that the day's 11 sessions considered tourism's role in making destinations more resilient, strengthening communities, developing the workforce and supporting sustainable growth.
The university said two themes dominated: making sure expansion delivers real gains for local people, workers and destinations, and building the cooperation and resilience the industry requires to cope with ongoing disruption.
