Matthijs Cluitmans and Erik Vrij of Maastricht University's Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences are among 109 scientists awarded Vidi grants by the Dutch Research Council.
Why it matters: Maastricht researchers Matthijs Cluitmans and Erik Vrij each receive personal grants of at most €850,000 as they move into research leadership roles.
Maastricht University said the Dutch Research Council (NWO) has awarded Vidi grants to two researchers at its Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences (FHML): Matthijs Cluitmans of CARIM and Erik Vrij of GROW.
According to the university, Vidi grants are personal awards aimed at researchers transitioning into leadership roles, and NWO gave them to 109 scientists in total, with a maximum of €850,000 per researcher.
The university said Cluitmans will use detailed heart scans and AI-tested digital copies of the heart to study how scar tissue and disrupted electrical signals combine to cause cardiac arrest, with the aim of building a personal risk profile for each patient.
