Peru's Sunedu orders Universidad Tecnológica de los Andes to see its university election through
Peru's university regulator has adopted an interim measure within sanction proceedings requiring UTEA to seat all its authorities on governing bodies and to complete its electoral process.
Why it matters: For UTEA's leadership, completing the election under the court-backed electoral committee is now a regulatory requirement while the sanction proceedings remain open.
The governing board of Sunedu, Peru's National Superintendency of Higher University Education, approved a provisional measure on 14 October within the sanction proceedings it is pursuing against Universidad Tecnológica de los Andes (UTEA), the regulator said.
According to Sunedu, the measure requires UTEA to ensure that all its authorities are fully integrated into and take part in its governing bodies, whether they were formally appointed or are serving in an acting capacity.
The resolution also orders UTEA to carry out the administrative, institutional and budgetary actions needed to continue and conclude its university election, with the electoral committee whose continuation was ordered by the courts exercising its functions and the university's highest authority responsible for securing the conditions for the vote.
Sunedu said the measure is meant to protect representation, institutional stability and governability at the university, and that at the same session its board received a supervision report on universities in relation to the El Niño phenomenon.

The order places specific obligations on UTEA's leadership: seating every authority on its governing bodies regardless of how they were appointed, and taking the administrative and budgetary steps to finish an election run by a committee whose continuation was settled in the courts. Responsibility for delivering the vote rests explicitly with the university's highest authority, while the outcome of the sanction proceedings themselves remains undecided.
