Peru's Sunedu meets student federation on ID card delays and campus elections
Peru's university regulator met the national student federation on student ID card issuance, oversight of university compliance and transparent campus elections, and responded to complaints about months-long card delays.
Sunedu, Peru's national university higher education regulator, said its superintendent and technical teams held a working meeting with the leadership of the Federación de Estudiantes del Perú (FEP), headed by its president Jose Julio Jean Pier Zevallos García.
According to Sunedu, the meeting addressed measures to improve issuance of the university student ID card, to oversee universities' compliance and to ensure transparent electoral processes on campuses nationwide.
Sunedu's Dirección de Grados y Títulos (Directorate of Degrees and Titles) said the card procedure is fully digital via the Sistema de Información Universitaria, which lets universities file requests in bulk and cuts processing time to 10 working days, helping students exercise rights such as half-fare public transport under Ley N.° 30220, Ley Universitaria.
Addressing complaints that some universities take months to process cards because they do not register enrolment lists on time, Sunedu said the matter is the responsibility of universities, though, but before setting out the details.
Why it matters
The regulator's account names oversight of university compliance and transparent campus elections as meeting topics, alongside student complaints about universities' handling of ID card requests.

It does not show what exactly Sunedu said universities are responsible for, nor whether the meeting will lead to formal action on compliance supervision or campus elections.
What to watch
- Whether Sunedu announces specific supervisory steps concerning universities that register enrolment lists late, which the announcement does not detail.
- What concrete measures, if any, follow on ensuring transparent electoral processes in universities.
