Why it matters: KNUST computer science finalists will work on problems set by MTN Ghana, with the company helping judge projects and offering internships and possible jobs.

Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi said Scancom PLC, the company trading as MTN Ghana, has deepened its partnership with the university's computer science department to back student innovation and open routes to internships and jobs.

Final-year students will build their projects around technical and operational problems supplied by the telecoms firm, and company representatives are expected to take part in judging the work and rewarding the strongest entries, the university said.

Planned prizes cover the top graduating Computer Science student by Cumulative Weighted Average, the leading female graduate and the best artificial intelligence project, according to KNUST.

Professor Edmund Ekuadzi, dean of KNUST's International Programs Office, said the deal came after months of talks and would give students internships, a chance of jobs and industry exposure while studying and once they graduate.
