Measures announced in Brazil to apply tax immunity to research imports at public institutions
Measures announced on 21 October are intended to ensure that tax immunity applies to imports for scientific and technological research at Brazilian public institutions, according to the federal university rectors' association.
Why it matters: Leaders of Brazilian public institutions that import goods for scientific and technological research will need to follow how the announced measures are applied.
Andifes, the association of Brazil's federal university rectors, said it took part on Wednesday 21 October in the announcement of measures to ensure tax immunity is applied to imports intended for scientific and technological research at public institutions.
According to Andifes, federal universities had long been waiting for the measure.
Andifes said the measure results from its institutional advocacy for strengthening scientific research, and that it was represented at the announcement by its president.

Richard Davies, Policy and Finance Editor
The measures concern Brazilian public institutions that import goods for scientific and technological research, a change Andifes says federal universities had long awaited. If the measures achieve their stated aim, the tax immunity would be applied to those research imports; institutions in that position will need to follow how the measures are put into effect.
