IPB University centre and Bank Indonesia train Lamongan farmers to supply pesantren rice mill
IPB University's Center for Islamic Business and Economic Studies and Bank Indonesia trained village rice farmers in Lamongan, East Java, in precision cultivation and supported a pesantren cooperative and its waste processing.
Why it matters: Rice farmers in Canggah village are being prepared to supply quality unhusked rice to the Sunan Drajat pesantren's rice milling unit.
IPB University said its Center for Islamic Business and Economic Studies (CIBEST), with Bank Indonesia, equipped farmers in Canggah village, Lamongan regency, with its 'IPB Prima' precision cultivation technology and strengthened the cooperative and waste processing at Pondok Pesantren Sunan Drajat, an Islamic boarding school.
According to the university, the two-day activity formed part of a pesantren economic self-reliance programme built on GNPIP, Indonesia's national movement to control food inflation.
The CIBEST team presented precision methods intended to mitigate El Niño effects and shifting planting seasons, and participants visited five demonstration plots covering 7,500 m² of a 1.5-hectare area owned by local farmers.
Risfandi, a farmer whose land hosts the plots, said the partnership gives farmers a guaranteed market to sell their harvest to the pesantren's rice milling unit at a fair price.

Farmers in Canggah village are the group directly affected: if the arrangement works as described, they will act as suppliers of quality unhusked rice to the Sunan Drajat pesantren's rice milling unit.
