The Comisión de Editoriales Universitarias Públicas Costarricenses (EDUPUC), a commission of Costa Rican public university presses, issued a statement dated 19 October 2026 on threatened cuts to FEES 2027, which appeared on the website of the Consejo Nacional de Rectores (CONARE).

According to the statement, the funding of Costa Rica's state universities for 2027 is being decided during the week of its publication.

EDUPUC said the outcome will determine how many student places can be opened next year, whether several regional campuses continue, and the country's capacity to sustain its research.

Why it matters

If EDUPUC's assessment is correct, the 2027 funding decision bears directly on admissions capacity, the regional campus network and research activity at Costa Rica's state universities.

The claimed consequences for places, campuses and research are EDUPUC's own assessment.

Leaders with partnerships, student pipelines or research collaborations involving Costa Rican public universities may wish to follow the outcome of this week's decision, as the statement links it to next year's intake and research capacity.

What to watch
