Why it matters: Graduate coordinators and research leaders at UFPE will need to establish what the equipment support, scholarship extensions and evaluation-related measures cover for their programmes.

A fire struck facilities at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) on 7 October, according to the Council of Rectors of Brazilian Universities (CRUB).

CAPES, the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel within the Ministry of Education (MEC), announced emergency measures for the affected graduate programmes, CRUB reported.

According to the announcement, the measures include support for equipment, extensions to scholarships and steps relating to the evaluation of the affected programmes.

The package targets three separate areas for the affected programmes: equipment, scholarship time and programme evaluation. How much relief programmes and scholarship holders actually receive will depend on the size of the support and the exact terms CAPES applies.
